Totally misleading title and back-of-book description: is not a book of instructions. This is a book where the author discusses what she did to make her people look the way they do. Some food for thought but quickly becomes a sort of put-down to the reader given the self promotion. Contains no lessons and the two demonstrations are vague. Although inexpensive, you won't look at it twice.

Nice painting but limited help
I love both her paintings and her videos and she definitely has an enthusiasm for watercolor art that is contagious. This very short book however was a little disappointing. It has nice samples of her art, mostly lifted from her other books, but not much information on how to do what she can do.. I like looking at her art and will do that often but when I need help painting figures, I think I might need to look to some other artists for help.

Concise Digest on Quick Figure Depiction
This is a very helpful little book for those who like to include figures in quick sketches, drawings, or paintings. It is not a beginner's how-to book with step by step instructions, but more of a compact digest of the things you need to be aware of when drawing or painting people. In that respect it is excellent and I it is one of the better art books I own. The discussions of perspective and posture are of great value because this is where so may go astray, i.e., rigid and unnatural figures. I did knock off one star though, because of the page on facial proportions (p 24). The shadow notes are good, but her relating the eyes and nose positions to the top and bottom of the ear is ill founded. The ear is always located in relation to the facial features and never vice versa. When the head is tilted even slightly forward or backward the ear will appear higher or lower in relation to the nose and eyes and is never used to position those facial features. Perhaps she did not intend it to read that way, and it is only a minor point that anyone with basic facial drawing experience will disregard.

More theoretical than instructive
Am disappointed with the book. I adore Hazel Soan (I have most of her books and DVDs) but this book is more descriptive than user friendly. It is not instructive, but rather more theoretical than her other books. Will return if I can.

there are many others out there that are better.
Mostly paintings by the artist and the colors she used in the various mediums. Some general instructions with reference to her paintings a but not the how-to examples I was looking for.If you're looking for a how-to book, there are many others out there that are better.

Easily guide to painting quick figures
This book is a very quick reference for painting people. The people are painted very loose, and it's informative to learn how to put people in your paintings when they are not the focal point. Wish it had a little more detail, but maybe because I am an experienced painter - for a beginner it would be wonderful.

Good work, worth having..
Very good work, enabling the experienced artist to add convincing crowd and individual scenes. I think it's a bit advanced, and would have liked to see simpler drawing methods... maybe like "The Carrot?" It is well put together and will be useful to all, sooner or later.

Extremely helpful
This is an extremely helpful book for placing human figures in paintings for the intermediate artist beginning to be critical about their work. The book is well organised and goes into proportions, tone, lighting, shadows, foreshortening, poses and a few other things. I bought the kindle version and it presents well.

Not what I expected
This book is more a showcase of the author’s works and does not give enough insight on the technique. More info would be more helpful for beginners

Not a tutorial book, title of this book is misleading.
This is not a book with instructions on how to paint people, more like a book showcasing the author's art. Definitely not a book for beginners. I returned my copy.

inspirational
Its not so much a tutorial in the normal teaching sense but provides a general discussion using Hazels own painting and sketches as examples of what can be achieved if you learn the basics of human anatomy and explore the use of quick strokes of paint to provides the basic shape or outline of a human form without using fine detail of facial features and the like. You learn by the examples to provide the basis for the observers imagination to complete the picture a bit like an impressionist type of approach.I found it truly inspirational and it prompted me to start brush sketching random figures in oils in a wide variety of poses and attitudes which I have not done for as long as I can remember. Providing you have knowledge of the basic human body proportions it only takes a little while to settle into the methods demonstrated and you start to improve very quickly with your appreciation of the loose and free format used.Well worth the moderate cost involved.

A goldmine of valuable information
I am an enthusiastic canvas torturer rather than an artist, but even so, I gained such an enormous amount of valuable tuition and information from this very easy to read book. I now have a good idea of what I need to understand, pay attention to, and where to start. The explanations and tips are accompanied by some awesome examples and closeup views of the author's paintings to demonstrate various points.I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. There is nothing unnecessary in the book and it doesn't assume that anyone is an idiot. There is only clear easy to learn from information and a strong encouragement to start making paintings come alive by adding people.I'm genuinely grateful that I stumbled upon this gem!

This is an inspirational book for dipping into when feeling creative. I did read other reviewers comments before deciding to buy but felt it was pricey so hesitated. Then the book was on offer so I bought it. This book is not a step-by-step manual though there are a couple of demonstrations included. I decided to keep the book because I feel it would be down to me to apply imagination from the illustrations offered by the author.
