Fans Should Be Pleased
Of course, the Supremes never would have hit the big time in 1964 without the wonderful compositions of Holland-Dozier-Holland, and their music remains timeless, but a big part of their appeal and mystique were the classy, sophisticated costumes and gowns they wore onstage and in publicity pics. No other girl group captured the Hollywood glamour the way these gals did. They were in a class all their own. Diana’s gamine, ‘thin-is-in’ look was years ahead of Twiggy, Florence was the regal, statuesque, full-bodied one and Mary, the flirty imp. There was a Supreme for every man’s taste and one which any girl could want to emulate. Those obsessed with fashion history will find lots to love in this book.I was impressed with the design and layout of the book. It is thick hardcover and the title is embossed nicely. I kind of wonder if the cover photo is a dig at Diana Ross since her face is hardly showing, but then Mary does not express any bitterness throughout the pages so perhaps I am overthinking it. I was never one of those fans who felt the need to ‘take sides’ either way. Speaking of that, this is not a dishy book like Dreamgirl or Supreme Faith, so if that’s what you’re looking for, it’s best to look elsewhere. While the glamour is the focus here, Mary also gives a chronological itinerary of their performance schedule through the early ‘60s to 1977 with mentions of the various members, Motown personnel and other showbiz types she encountered and worked with along the way. Not a lot of deep info here. She does recount the time Princess Margaret asked if she was wearing a wig when the Supremes met the Royals in 1968, which I found amusing. The one complaint I have is that many of the photo scans seem like they were over-sharpened in Photoshop. I realize this was probably to emphasize the details on the gowns, but it makes the faces and everything else look too sharp, giving it that jagged look. Also, I wish it had been printed on glossy pages for a lusher look. Many of the pics show the gowns in great detail, so you can really see the beading and stitching up close. You’ve got to hand it to Mary Wilson. Over 40 years after the group split, she’s still able to rake in some bucks cashing in on that time period. Good for her! It says something about the Supremes everlasting appeal that CDs, DVDs and books about them are still selling 55 years after their first #1 hit. This is a nice coffee table book that should please most Supremes fans.

FOR A VERY CHEAP PRICE> MARY WILSON SPENT MPORE THAN $100,000 to assemble this collection of Supremes Gowns Dress's and outfits; Back in 2006, I met her in Vermont. IF YOU LOVE THE SUPREMES OR MOTOWN MUSIC LOOK AT HER WEBSITE and go see her. The Last time I saw her she was touring with Martha Reeves as in Martha Reeves and the Vandella's. Mary at age 70 plus, Is lovely She lets audience members come up on stage during STOP IN THE NAME OF LOVE.She was so friendly and kind. She comes out to lobby and GLADLY signed your records your photos. And she posses for photos with fans. This Book is a project of love. ONLY MARY kept the Supremes going until finally 2 minutes away from being Disco Stars she finally pulls the plug. She and Diana are now at peace. She has been slowly buying up as many sets of 3 matching Gowns sets. as she possibly could. Sometimes she could only buy 1 of the three. From 1964 to 1977 The Supremes wore MANY HUNDREDS of outfits. This book is of the Outfits. The Supremes collection Mary compiled. tours the country and I suppose outside the country she was given an AWARD for excellence.I contributed $40 to her goal. I was actually supposed to See her and THE FOUR TOPS on April 11th, 2019 but COVID canceled. It and no I did not get my money back. YET/ Mary stayed in the lobby signing and taking photos with fans LONG AFTER the intermission she stayed the entire time Martha was on stage.

VISUALLY STUNNING!
The Supremes, apart from their familiar hit records, were known for their Glamour, with a capital G. This magnificent tome by talented Supreme Mary Wilson chronicles the evolution of Supreme Glamour throughout the years and it does it with class and style. The color photographs of each gown are stunning with close ups of the fabrics and designs so that you can really appreciate the beauty and the work that went into it. Remarkable! But this book is not only about fashions, sequins, and embroidery. You also get The Supremes story told by co-funder Miss Wilson in her usual direct often candid way. I am proud to own Supreme Glamour and have purchased several copies as gifts to family and friends.

Wonderful Book!
I haven't yet read Mary's previous works, but I feel this is a good primer for those future readings. You get an overview of the history of The Supremes, which is split in half by a beautiful feature on the gowns that were still owned by Mary. It was so much fun to learn how the clothes made the act, and vice versa. It was a quick read for me, but is an absolutely stunning work- I recommend it!
