Sicilian Card Games: An easy-to-follow guide

This appears to be a self published book. The author could use a good editor for spelling, grammar, and clarity. That being said, we were able to understand everything and learn some new card games. I bought this and Sicilian cards for an Italian themed date night with my husband and we were able to learn new games and have fun with it. I asked my 12 year old son to read the instructions to Scopa and then teach me, so I could be more prepared for the evening with my husband. My son is used to all manner of strategy games (Puerto Rico, Agricola, Dominion, Through the Ages, etc.) as well as card and dice games, and he has an 11th grade reading comprehension level. All that to say I was a bit surprised when he told me he was confused by the instructions. So we sat down to read it together and starting with the history. It really isn't complicated, it is just that the editorial mistakes throw off the focus so you are left first making sure you understood what is meant, before being able to apply it.

This book rocks! The instructions are clear and detailed — it’s easy to get a game up and running. I’ve taken this on trips with me, along with a deck of cards I got on Amazon. It’s a great way to have fun with a group, especially one with a mix of kids and adults. Perfect travel size, too.Not only are the games fun to play — the book itself is fun to read. The instructions are entertaining and there are pages on the history of the cards and the cultural context in which they are played, rendered in a light, vivid style.All this and the price is fantastic. Just get it. You won’t be disappointed.

A few good games are explained, most for children. Several typos and the brevity reveal that the author was not really into the project. You can learn this material on your own online.

Interesting and informative book, however, the photos of the playing cards should have been of better quality and should be in color. It looks like the photos of the cards were done by an amateur and the flash has blown out portions of the photos. They should do a new edition of this book with good color photos and the book would be very good.
