Near-Perfect Pocket Wi-Fi (If You Pack a Power Bank)

My husband and I travel frequently, both domestically and internationally, relying heavily on our phones and laptops. Since we avoid unsecured public Wi-Fi due to security concerns, GlocalMe has been a strategic tool for staying connected—even in remote areas. The pocket Wi-Fi stays tucked in my bag, delivering a consistently strong signal everywhere, from cafés on the 40th floor of skyscrapers to tiny desert towns. So far, we’ve never seen the connection waver, and while our ultimate test will be overseas, I don’t expect performance to differ much. That said, nothing’s perfect. I’m giving 5 stars because 4.5 isn’t an option, but here’s my reasoning:1. Battery Life: It drains fairly quickly (4–5 hours unplugged), so we keep it paired with a portable charger.2. Data Plans: They’re pricey—potentially prohibitive for budget travelers. However, GlocalMe’s game-changer is the SIM card slot. For international trips, we’ll use local SIMs (far cheaper), a feature that set GlocalMe above competitors for us.Despite the trade-offs, the reliability and flexibility make it a travel essential.

Very Happy I Purchased This

I had plans to be in Jamaica for a month and researched various ways to have reliable internet connection without spending a small fortune. I settled on this product and am very glad I did for several reasons.1. Most importantly, it worked as advertised. Where ever there was 3G service on the island, we had internet service through the G4 Pro. My daughter had to finish up an on line course the first week of our vacation and she was able to have reliable internet service to connect her laptop to. We were able to connect all eight of our devices to the hot spot through out our vacation.2. It is surprisingly thin and light. I expected it to be more bulky than it is, but it is no larger than some of the popular smart phones out right now. It is probably smaller and lighter than the biggest of the new phones.3. The touch screen is convenient and makes operation easy.4. The Google maps app is built in. I used this much more than I thought I would and I didn’t have to use phone data. And yes, Google maps mostly worked even in Jamaica, although on some of the less traveled roads it was iffy. I wouldn’t rely on Google maps in rural areas of a foreign country unless you have some prior knowledge of the area (I did). Otherwise, you might find yourself in an area that tourists should avoid.5. You can buy a local data plan and SIM card, which is much less expensive.6. You can buy more data from the hotspot touch screen, or from the app you download on your smart phone.7. Customer service is pretty amazing. Four months after I bought it and after my trip was over, it occurred to me I hadn’t received the 8GB of U.S. data, so I reached out to the company via the app and they immediately sent the data to my unit. I was impressed with the responsiveness. The only criticism I can make is that the battery life, while not terrible given hotspot and GPS use is a big power drain, is not strong enough for the hotspot to be used as a power bank for other devices. I think if you use the G4 Pro as a hotspot while trying to charge another device, it would not last long enough to do both. But the power bank feature was not a major reason for me to purchase the G4 Pro and I brought an actual more powerful power bank (much larger in size than the G4 Pro) with me. So no points off for this.

Long-term customer of GlocalMe, horrible experience

I bought this device as an upgrade to my current one, before a trip. I've been a GlocalMe customer for many, many years and this is the third hotspot device I've bought from them (have upgraded over the years as new models have become available). I used to be a huge fan of GlocalMe, until I bought this. Got the device, it's about the size of a cell phone (a bit thicker than I wanted, but GlocalMe has gone a long way with getting these hotspots to a smaller size!) I had 1.1GB on my device, which I verified. Connectivity was not an issue. As I was going to be gone for 3.5 weeks, I purchased a package for additional data (3GB, which should have been plenty enough - I travel a lot and wouldn't go over 3 GB per month. I really only use the data sparingly, and I'm careful to have my devices set up to not automatically update or use up data unless I'm actively trying to when I travel. Also I try to stick to free wifi when I can access it). The money was deducted from my bank account, and my device noted that I had purchased the 3GB, but the 3GB was not reflected in my data available. It kept deducting data from the 1.1GB every time I logged in. I didn't think much of it, as I've never had a bad experience with GlocalMe in the past and I figured that maybe when I run out of the 1.1GB, it would then show the 3 GB and start deducting from that.Use after use, I kept seeing the data go down from the 1.1GB. On day 3 of my trip I was in a situation when I needed more data than usual, so I used up a bunch of the 1.1GB (watched it go down, but was not worried as I had 3GB left for the rest of my trip... or so I thought). When eventually my data got down to 0, the 3GB never loaded up and I was left in a real bind with no internet access. That night, when I got to my hotel and had wifi access, I contacted GlocalMe customer service. The CS agent I talked to kept arguing with me that I used all of the data. I've used GlocalMe for many years and I'm very well traveled, and I generally don't use more than 3 GB in a month when I travel - there is positively no way I used 4.1 GB in 3 days. I told her repeatedly that I monitored closely the data I had left after I bought the 3GB and I never saw it added to my balance. Talking to the CS agent was painful as I didn't feel like she was listening to what I was telling her. She directed me to a place that showed I had bought the 3GB, but I already knew that. Then she she kept saying that my balance shows 0 therefore I must have used the data. The she asked for screen shots of the data usage - which I did not have. She then told me I should check my remaining data every time I use the device - which I did, and which never showed the data I had bought. She mentioned maybe my phone apps were updating in the background. I told her I always make sure to set up my phone so that does not happen when I travel. By then it was 3:15 am and I was exhausted. With no resolution in sight, I let the agent know I needed to get some sleep but really need my data as I am in the middle of travels. She assured me she would be talking to Tech, understood that I was going to bed but will leave messages for me. She then messaged me the MAC addresses of the devices I had connected to my hotspot and asked me to check. I was sleeping by then. She then asserted that since I had more than one device, then surely I had used all the data. I don't see how that's a conclusion she can make, I travel with the same amount of devices every time, and I have never used 4.1 GB of data in 3 days. I don't even use this much with my cell when I travel within the US and don't rely on free wifi! 30 minutes later, she wrote "since we are not getting any responses from you, we'll close the chat". I had told her I was going to bed and did not want this to happen!! I got the messages the next morning, had to vacate the hotel room and could not start from scratch with a new CS agent, especially as I lost wifi when I left the hotel. This created a lot of trouble during my trip. I was reluctant to put more money into my hotspot in case it would not get credited again. I ended up not using the hotspot anymore and having to find alternative ways to connect. I've loved GlocalMe for many years but this was a bad experience. I paid for data I never got, CS was not helpful, and I was left in a bind in the midst of my travels. I think I need to take my business elsewhere at this point.

Works great outside, not so good inside

It worked ok out of the motorhome, but too weak inside of it. I returned the unit
