yes these mountain bike pedals are compatible with shimano spd sm-sh51 (black) cleats.

Q: I find it extremely difficult to get clipped in. One they do clip they work well. Is there something I can do to make it easier to clip in?

Your clip springs might be set too tightly. There is a screw connected to the spring (it is only on one side - don't go loosening any of the symmetrical screws...) that you can try turning to the left a few times. That should make it easier to clip in/out. Other than that, it is really only a matter of practice. You should be able to get a noticeable improvement! Good luck!

shimano m520 pedals are double-sided clips. m520 is suitable for mountain XC. The ZP-109S mountain bike pedal is a single-sided clip. ZP-109S is suitable for riding on simple forest roads. Their common feature is that they can use spd sm-sh51 cleats.

Q: Can i use regular sneakers with these pedals or just spd ready shoes

Only suitable for double-hole bicycle shoes. The function of the pedal frame is to prevent damage due to collision. If you are use regular sneakers, your feet can easily slip off the pedals.You will be hurt.
