Your cat should never be able to chew on its own collar. When you put the collar on it should be just loose enough to slip two fingers easily, but not loosely, between the collar and your cat's neck. Release collars expect stress to come from a certain angle. A properly fitted collar that gets hung up, releases. There is no guarantee an improperly fitted collar will have the proer stress to release in an emergency. It endangers your cat. If you can't figure out how tight a collar should be, take the collar to the vet with you and have them demonstrate.

Q: Is there a breakaway collar version of this? I know from first hand past experience this type of buckle on a collar is dangerous to cats.

When I bought this I had the same question. I saw responses that said there is a breakaway version, and the packaging on the item said it was breakaway, but I would not consider the product a breakaway collar. The buckle is one sided, with the opposite end threading through it to be held there by friction. I tried to pull it apart and could not, so I don’t know how my 8 pound cat is supposed to if she ever got stuck. If you’d still like to use this product, you can do what another user suggested, and zip tie it to an actual breakaway collar. This is what I did and i don’t worry about my cat injuring herself while wearing it.

Excellent product
