Charles Evans’ Watercolour Rescue: Top tips for correcting your mistakes and preventing them in the first place

Been playing with watercolor for about a year with only YouTube instruction, which has been amazing, but this book has lots that will help me improve on techniques and fix problems. I like having a book in hand that I can refer to occasionally rather than try to find solution elsewhere.

This is not a long winded how to paint start to finish "instruction" book. It is "to the point" tips to prevent common watercolor errors & how to approach a fix once the problem has presented itself. It is worth reading through to familiarize yourself with where to find the fix when you need it. Then it becomes a companion coach on how to improve your results. I have quite a few watercolor instruction books. This one promises to be invaluable in my pursuit of the joy of creating beauty in watercolor.

This booklet is loaded with watercolor experiences. Good reference material.

Excellently written and illustrated by a master watercolorist. His passion for the craft shines through on every page. The compact size, compared to nearly every other watercolor book in my library, means that this will stay near my palette - in my studio, my plein air kit, or my backpack.

Book shows photo of mistakes, describes the problem and how to fix it, and shows the improved painting.I found many of the tips useful.

This small book is excellent for landscape watercolor painters. It does not deal with portraits or still life, but the trips are well explained and illustrated for any subject, each tip on one 2-page spread. If you are struggling with watercolor, this book will definitely help.

This is such a helpful book. It is well written and easy to understand. Great addition to someone starting out in watercolor.

This is an extremely useful book. I took up watercolour painting when covid first kicked off and found it to be a rewarding and, at times, frustrating hobby. I wish I'd had this book from the start to help me through some of the problems. It is written in a straightforward, no-nonsense way with plenty of step-by-step illustrations. If you are about to try watercolour painting for the first time the information on which, and how many, brushes and paints to buy will most probably save you more than the cost of the book. Charles Evans also has some instructional videos to paint along with on You Tube which are very good and full of sound advice. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

This book is a mixed bag, and its value to you will vary a great deal depending on the kinds of challenges you're experiencing in your watercolour painting. Obviously it's not possible to cover everything in a small book. (And it is a small book in size and thickness.) But I thought the formula of trying to address each issue on a single spread, while logical, meant that some of the more common problems weren't covered in enough depth or with enough variety of examples.Over all there's some decent advice with some tips that I hadn't encountered before, and I did like the focus on *rescuing* mistakes, as well as the honesty about problems that really can't be rescued. (In some cases, especially with the "Gail's fails" paintings, the author doesn't really rescue the painting but rather paints his own version of the scene, rectifying the issues.) The book loses a star not because the solutions are bad in themselves, but because some of the explanations for the mistakes/solutions introduce dodgy science or oversimplify what's going on, which is a pity.
