The Popular Performers Series has several excellent books in its collection. I pay attention to who is the arranger and the skill level of the arrangements. I find the Early Advanced arrangements can be played by a good sight reader. However, Advanced arrangements require spot-on technique and timing, especially timing.The 1940's and 1950's Love Songs was arranged by Carol Tornquist who has written an interesting and sophisticated collection of standards. They are written at an Early Advanced skill level. I particularly like "Angel Eyes", "I Wanna Be Around" and "A Certain Smile". By themselves, these arrangements alone make the price of the book a bargain. After playing these arrangements, I now specifically look for books that include arrangements by Carol Tornquist.This book has music that is interesting to play and is well worth the price paid. I highly recommend it.

I love old songs and Carol does a nice job of arranging these classics. They are fun to play but I hope I get a chance to play them other than just for myself.

I'm disappointed in this collection. I have other books arranged by Carol Tornquist and they are more imaginatively and richly arranged. These are just too simple for my tastes. It's very difficult to find books at an advanced level and I'd hoped this one fit that category.If you are at an intermediate level, this would be a great book for you. Anyone beyond that will be rather disappointed. I especially was looking forward to "At Last" since it was so highly rated by other reviewers....but it is a pale shadow compared to some other more complex arrangements I have.It's ok. I'll keep it for "warm up" tunes, but it won't be in my "favorites" stack.
