Soil Moisture Sensor Review
Work well they appear to be accurate great for the value not sure about the durability but will let you know later and easy to use

This is not for detecting water level in soil
I am taking a point off for the wrong indication, you do not want to put this into soil it will corrode. It would also need an AC circuit to make it not corrode which you would need to modify this circuit to support. It is much better as a leak or water detection device. This is what I am using it for, to detect water leaks, in my setup. The device will self destruct if you leave it in water for any length of time. It will plate out you can put some conformal coating on it to help it last a bit longer in water, in the end though it is not the right part for soil moisture detection as advertised. If you are looking for a soil moisture detector you are better off with a capacitive style sensor.

OK
This product is ok for use in student and hobby projects. For application as a soil moisture sensor for long periods of time, it is recommended to power the electronic module automatically to turn it on only when taking measurements, turning it off immediately when finished and thus minimize electrolytic corrosion. You can also swap the connections of the sensing element periodically so that the two electrodes rotate polarity.

For prototyping only
These are beautifully cheap and they work great. Just don’t expect it to last more than a week in soil. More repeatable than I expected and dead simple to use with an arduino.

Inconsistent baseline
Works well but the baseline value changes so much it’s tough setting the temperature range

Reliable Soil Moisture Sensing: A Fun Experiment with HiLetgo LM393 Sensor and Pico W!
I purchased the HiLetgo 5pcs LM393 Soil Moisture Sensor for use with my Pico W, and it worked seamlessly. I hooked it up to a small LCD via the breadboard and received accurate moisture output. It was a fun experiment to undertake. However, my wife had different ideas when it came to testing the moisture levels of her plants—she preferred using her finger! Nonetheless, for anyone interested in DIY projects or exploring soil moisture sensing, this sensor is a reliable and affordable option.

Corrodes within 7 days
If you're planning to use this to monitor the moisture in soil constantly, this is not for you. This works okay if you dip it and pull it out and dry it which I don't think is what folks want to use this particular item for. In the picture you can see the corrosion that occurs this is within 7 days in a basil plant. For the first couple days it worked great once it was calibrated correctly for use with a raspberry pi, but after a few days it just started reporting that the soil was dry all the time regardless of how moist it was, very disappointing.
