It is red glass and not coated.

Q: Can I buy bee guards for this feeder?

The "flowers" have seals, as does the lid, making it very "bee-proof" without guards. We had problems with bees with other feeders and replaced them with this one and it eliminated the problem. Also very easy to fill and maintain.

Yes the glass is sturdy, doesn't leak.
