Q: Are these pimpermel placemats made by portmerion or as i suspect, are they a copy version ? they seem to be cheaper and i wonder about the quality ?

There is only one label on the back of the mats which says 'Pimpernel' it is not stated where they are manufactured, however, we think that the quality is excellent value for the money. It all depends on how you would look after them. They are a 'formica' top with a cork backing and quite substantial. I would not recommend that oven ware straight from the oven is placed on them, but they are certainly adequate for hot dinner plates. We have a glass dining table and we are very happy to use them on that. Hope this helps. Please note that we have just ordered a lot of the Portmeirion table ware, but not all of it has been manufactured in England, some of the larger serving dishes have been manufactured in China!!?

The ones we have in stock are cork backed coasters with a plastic coating. As far as I'm aware, there isn't a ceramic version available.
