Side note - I use the open-source BitWarden password manager, which supports Yubikeys. BitWarden is free on multiple devices like PC, Mac, Linux, and your smartphone - for some of the bells and whistles like supporting a YubiKey you have to upgrade to their $10 a year plan, totally reasonable and you should support this company, they are great and my favorite password manager.Now - on to the Yubikey itself. One of the great selling points is that you cannot log on to services that support Yubikey (e.g. your bank, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) if you do not have physical possession of the Yubikey. If someone happened to obtain your User ID and password somehow, they still wouldn't be able to log in thanks to the Yubikey, so that is peace of mind. Speaking of peace of mind, do yourself a favor and buy 2 because you're going to want to store the backup key somewhere safe and easily accessible in case you ever lose your primary key. It is not technically necessary, but it would be an extra hassle to try and prove to the bank or other service that you are the actual client because you won't be able to log in without the key, so there is no easy password reset that you might be used to. The cell providers don't always do a great job in this situation and have been known to transfer your account to the hacker and their SIM card. I guess you would have to be a high-value target for something like this to happen, but it's good to know that the Yubikey protects you from this type of attack and has your back.

I didn't need one of the fancier ones, this one is great. I mostly got it because I was between cell phones (retired & no longer had a work phone, haven't bought a personal phone yet). Even after I get a personal phone, this will be great for a second form of authentication online. Win/win!!

Purchased for a family member who has difficulty with multifactor authentication by phone or text message. This seems to work well, authenticating with just a touch.

This key is a good buy, but if like me you prefer to save a few dollars to get quality, price and usability, my best advice is that it is worth it to buy their pro versions or latest models. Although thanks to this purchase I was able to reinforce the security of all my environments, I must admit that you will be left wanting to use their app and the 2fa or TOTP options for the security codes that this one here does not offer, but other than that it is a good buy if you are not going to be left wanting to use the verification codes.

this thing isn't ready. 1st you need two but I don't get it? if you need 2 keys but need to have one as an emergency backup (not kept together with the main key) then how do you register for new accounts with your key? you have to have the backup key! this seems like one of those riddles without an answer!the cheap security key is worthless. you can get other keys that do nothing on amazon for cheaper.back to the riddle... so you think okay you need 3 keys! LOL just kidding. but seriously unless you have a finite number of accounts OR just sign up for new accounts at a desktop computer where the emergency key stays it doesn't make sense. I'm currently carrying around 2 keys like an idiot. but that is because I didn't make a list of the sites I used them with nor is any list kept on the key end. Huge issue. So now I carry them in case I run into a site that has them so I can remove them but I'll never know if I remove them all will I? again back to riddles with no answer!!!! what I plan on doing one day is just using it for my 2 computers and bitwarden. I already have one from the bank so that covers that. it really doesn't make sense with the adoption of passkeys with your password manager to just secure hardware and the place you keep all your secrets.... again the idea is great but my banks really old school OTP dongle form RSA is waaaaaay better even though its 2024.
