Easy to use right out of the box
The media could not be loaded. My laundry room flooded and I'm replacing the flooring. The moisture is in the sub flooring - along with the existing flooring. The floor company told me to buy a moisture reader to monitor the sub floor, because they cant install replacement/new flooring until the reading is less than 5%. When I first got this reader it was over 50% on the sub floor, so I have been using heaters and fans. Now it is down to 25% - but the best thing is... I know nothing about flooring or moisture or how to use moisture readers, but this is super intuitive and easy to use.> Just hit one button to tell it what material it is "wall, hardwood, softwood", etc. then it's super easy - just lay the reader where you want it to read and it does the rest.> Seems very accurate. If i test, then re-test again, readings stay consistent.> Would be easy to locate a leak. You really do just run it over surfaces and it will change in real time. I personally dont have an active leak, but this is accurate and can pin point areas that are more moist than others.> In the video - the sub floor is less moist than the flooring that was soaked and is still installed. You can see how it detects different moisture levels in different areas. Very nice way to monitor as moisture levels go down.> OVERALL - so happy I went with this model, even though I was comparing it with a couple others that were a little cheaper. This one works VERY VERY well.. that's all that is important when your in a situation where you need one of these. If you buy a cheaper one, that may not be as accurate - you will be kicking yourself later when your entire project is up in the air and your going to spend that extra $10 at Starbucks because your stressed out and need coffee :)

Good but should last longer
Good meter, just wish it was a little more rugged. This is my 3rd and they just dont last. The screens go after a few years.

Moisture meter for Woodworking
I am not a professional reviewer!I bought this moisture meter September 2020 for $48 to use on some cookies that my son cut out of a tree that we removed because it was too close to a power line. He says, “So I could make something out of them.”Apparently, it is really good at finding moisture from leaks in walls, but it also gives numbers for hardwood and softwood. I was interested in relative numbers anyway, and for that it works really well.It has a “pad” on the back for the measuring area of about 1.5" x 1.5", but they do make one with pointed pins, too. It is very rugged feeling, and I’m not going to test that part out!"It can read the levels up to 3/4" (19mm) deep into the surface with a broad measurement range of 0 to 53% for softwood, 0 to 35% for hardwood, and relative readings for wallboard, drywall, and masonry."It mostly just sits there on my tool shelf and has not run the 9V alkaline battery down. That’s a plus for me, too. Recommended.

returned for two reasons
I returned it first because it was faulty. The unit I received did not read moisture at all when placed flat on surface per its instrux. I could sometimes get it to read (maybe 50% of the time) by slowly rotating it at an angle from the surface... but then the reading varied widely across a range so I had to watch it to try to see what the highest reading in the range was. That's probably a manufacturing flaw in the one device, so maybe not everyone will have that experience. However, there is also a design shortcoming that amplified the problem: the screen viewing angle is extremely narrow. You can only read the display if you are directly in front of the display or a little below a perpendicular line on it. Anywhere to the sides or above angle looking down on the display and it is completely invisible. If you are in a position where you have to hold the meter at different angles (for example, up on a ladder looking at readings on a wall and a ceiling in several spots) you have to go through some real contortions to both get the reading and also be able to see it on the display. Normally that is where you would use the "hold" button to freeze a reading and move the device to an angle where you can read the display, but couple that with the first problem where it reads nothing when placed flat against a surface and you have a device that is simply impossible to use. I am replacing it with a pin version.
