Product Description
TOCA Race Driver is the next evolution of Codemasters' renowned Touring Car series. At its core, Race Driver remains an intense, realistic racing game, but introduces an innovative new feature to the racing series--a narrative character-based storyline. Players assume the role of aspiring test driver Ryan McKane, looking to prove himself in the world of racing. Driven by the death of his father and a lifetime spent in the shadow of his brother, Ryan McKane rages into the spotlight of a world that respects only winners. As Ryan, take a grip on the wheel and chase down his destiny in a hi-octane career of fast and furious racing. Race Driver features up to 14 cars gunning for position on track at once, a vehicle damage system which dynamically affects on track performance, and a state-of-the-art physics engine tested for realism by professional race drivers. There are 13 global championships, including official series, 42 licensed touring and race cars, including Mercedes-Benz CLK, Alfa Romeo GTV, Dodge Viper GTS-R, with AI that allows them to behave just like their real life counterparts, and 38 international circuits recreated under license including Bathhurst, Hockenhiem, Charlotte, and Silverstone. Races are interspersed with rich cinematic sequences which drive the narrative character-based storyline.
.co.uk Review
TOCA Race Driver, the first of the TOCA racing series to feature on the PS2, screeches in with a whole new gameplay twist. The usual single race and multiplayer races, plus 38 tracks and 42 cars, are still here, but the real development is the story mode. You take on the part of young racer Ryan McKane, initially testing for a small racing team with the ultimate aim of becoming world champion; the result is a very immersive experience in which the player progresses with McKane, moving through simple races and on to the cut and thrust of the worldwide circuit. Those familiar with the previous TOCA games will immediately notice that the car's handling has been made easier--a second spent off the track doesn't end up in those frustrating spins. However, the more arcade-like style of handling may lead to fans of more hardcore racing games being a touch disappointed. Graphically the game is great, although a 60Hz mode should have been included. Damage, scenery and all the other cars whiz around the courses with little or no slowdown. All in all, TOCA Race Driver is a superb racing game mixed with a new innovative style of game progression that produces much entertainment and excitement. --Laurent S Hall

Manufacturer's Description
Exhaust drifts across the asphalt as engines roar and tyres scream their impatience against the red-hot surface. Sunlight sparks off the bodywork of the touring cars drawing up to the grid and on the track ahead, heat shimmers transform the raceway into treacherous pools of quicksilver. As a car pulls into the number three position on the grid, the crowd explodes. Ryan McKane, the meteoric newcomer who's taking the ToCA Touring Car circuit by storm, leans from his window to acknowledge his adoring fans. Not yet World Champion, but far from the unknown test driver of just a few short months ago, Ryan's career has its foot hard on the gas pedal, powering towards the chequered flag. It's going to take all your courage, all your skill and all your driving passion to take Ryan from rookie to a world-beating race driver, in this first-of-its-kind cinematic thrill-ride of a game. Power slide around the opposition, face your challenges head-on, cheer the successes and mourn the losses, but above all--win.

Stand up if you hate Ryan McKane
This is a decent game, but could have been extended so much more from the superb Toca World Touring Cars on the PS1. The game features 13 licensed championships including Toca Tour, DTM, and Pacific series, and loads of cars, many of which can be unlocked. The racing is of a good standard, with up to 14 cars on track. The graphics are good, especially on some of the tracks, but some of the cars do look a bit sketchy in places. The overall gameplay is reasonably good, but the thing that really makes the game is the career. You are Ryan McKane (a complete tw@t, ahem) trying to work your way up through the ranks and emulate your brother and your father, who died 15 years ago in an accident. Of course it was no accident, and you obviously come face to face with the man responsible. The story is good and well drafted, with good depth. The cut scenes are nice touches too.Overall a good game, with a superb story. Shame about the main charecter, who many have grown to loathe. 8/10

CLASSIC RACING GAME
I really like this game.It has great racing action, it's fast and on the edge and delivers enough for you to want you to go back for more. Add a story line which is new to racing games and you are set for a great experience. Cars bump and grind along a narrow track and with a very realistic damage model I found myself actually cringing whenever I hit one of the barriers with the sound of glass and metal smashing in my ears. Only gripe is that graphically the game lets itself down. Codemasters seem to make brilliant games gameplay wise, but doesn't seem to think much of adding A class graphics to their games. I played codemasters grand prix 3 on pc and for a pc game I thought graphically it wasn't up to scratch. Same for toca ...scenery looks fine and realistic, but cars in the distance looks like a PS1 game ...scream down the track and in the distance is one of the other cars looking like a blurry dot until you get up close and it transforms into a car.Maybe I am being harsh but I think for a game that comes out at this stage of the PS2's life cycle and with gran turismo 3 as a bench mark toca graphically falls well short.Don't get me wrong, this is an above average racing game which is trying something different with a story line which I think works well, only criticism is the very average graphics. Buy it for it's brilliant racing action ! 5 stars for racing ...3 stars for the graphics !

Good drivin' fun - just not quite GT3
Yet another driving game, and this time about Touring Cars. 13 different championships, 38 different circuits (which sometimes look fairly similar, although this is a race circuit, not rallying through the countryside!), 42 different cars, 14 cars on-track at the same time... There's the specs. But how does it play?On-track handling is pretty good, maybe a little more arcadey and a little less realistic. You do however get a satisfying feeling of weight when you deliberately shove another car out of the way (and also when they try to do the same to you). The "most realistic damage yet" is pretty realistic but nothing completely amazing. The graphics are acceptable(ish) but are way off the likes of standard-setting Gran Turismo 3. Sound effects (i.e. engine noises) are okay as well, albeit when lots of cars are close together it tends to sound like an Atari as opposed to a Playstation! Thankfully this is quite rare. The unusual addition here is the career mode where our hero, Ryan McKane, must race to avenge the death of his father (which features in the dramatic and well-directed intro). It sees you choosing between teams to sign up for, then meeting their targets, then (hopefully) rising through the ranks to better cars and more action. Your usual time trial, arcade, multiplayer and practice modes are also there.Overall, apart from the niggles this game is one you can pick up and play for hours. It is actually fun. Maybe more fun than Gran Turismo 3, but much less realistic. Racing fans give this a try with confidence.

Power and Glory or the Pits?
The TOCA series has always promised much, and usually delivered. However, with Race Driver, there seems to be a fair amount of dissapointment to dampen the enjoyment. I will start with the major flaws, saving the positive aspects till the end, as there are some surprisingly excellent touches. Firstly, for anyone who has played the superb World Touring Cars on the PS1- this is just an extension of that - minus the night races! However, the pop-ups are glaringly frequent, and the rendering fuzzy and lacking detail on some views. The sound, especially of the bonus cars is appalling on some replays (again, the real attention has gone into the 'official' race machines), and the handling, whilst great, is just too safe and simple (only the bonus vehicles present any kind of powersliding challenges!) - In three or so sesssions I am nearly half way through the 'intermediate' league with a Schumacheresque win rate! This game has been Americanised (literally), needlessly, and dumbed down a notch from the PS1 series. The good points; well, Mini Coopers, Marcos, TVR Tuscan Challenge, and NASCAR type racing, along with some pretty good car models (lovely interiors in some cases) for one! Secondly, blasting through the old Hockenheim Circuit in a GT1, as viewed from the wide angle bonnet cam produces the most incredible (and smooth) sensation of speed I have ever witnesses - absolutely terrifying!I cannot claim this is a full review, as this game keeps surprising me at every turn in my limited time with it. However, this title has been a disappointment in many ways - a sideways move from the PS1 rather than the great leap forward we had all expected. The pack shots seem to contain some high end photos - an admission in my humble opinion of a game not quite delivering on it's promises. A great shame, as this is undoubtably (to this fully blown petrol head who's seen it all, whether in -car, side of the track, or on the computer!!!) the most entertaining game I've played since GTA - GT3 will probably stay in the box along with V -Rally 3 for a long while to come!
