Great for RS422 communications
I needed a simple solution for RS422 communications and this was it. I only bought a pair to test. I just bought more to hook up the rest.

Works great, here is a pinout of the RJ45 connector
I have been using these for years on random industrial equipment that connects with RJ11, RJ12, or RJ45 serial connections.

Perfect to extend or adapt legacy RS232 devices
I used this to adapt to my Tektronix THS700 series oscilloscope (710/720/730) which has an RJ-45 RS232 port. Worked like a charm with the connections shown in the attached diagram (Thanks to the reviewer that posted the StarTech data sheet). This would also be perfect to extend RS232 cables using cheap CAT 5 ethernet cables. Of course, you'll need an RS232 to USB converter to connect to any computer made in the past decade. I've had very good luck with the UGREEN adapters sold on Amazon.

Pin removal
I read a couple of negative reviews complaining that the pins could not be removed once inserted.Of course not else when you attached a male db9 to this female it would force the pins out of the housing. If you inadvertently insert a pin into the wrong hole you need to use a pin extractor designed for this type of pin such as the AMP 91285 pictured. The tool is inserted from the rear. In a pinch you could probably make something, it's just a narrow steel tube with a slit down the length to allow the wire to enter

Something Most Sane People will Never Need.
[Something Most Sane People will Never Need.]As for the rest of use, condolences. It's ok.Worked for me.Be advised; There is no pinout information on the bag, in the bag, on the shell, etc.No big deal.Just ring out the leads with a continuity meter. You have no continuity meter - you say. Then use the Force. One can peer into the back shell with a flash light - and, make a semi-educated guess.Once I had the pinout established, I was faced with deciding which colored wire should go in to which hole.Sounds simple enough.Should have been simple enough. The schematic drawing I had to go by was logically impossible to comply with.Once again, Use the Force - Luke. The bag should have included a socket extraction tool.Fortunately, I had one.Three attempts later - and, I still had issues.By "not" following the manufacturer's instructions. And, by following established RS232 conventions, I managed to get it to work.Summary:It "is" quite useful. If you get it right the first time, you won't need an extraction tool.I'd recommend it.Expect to put in more time and effort than expected.

Gender was hard to determine but this is a good product
Used this product to link a Power Line Modem to a Universal Devices Polisy. Converting the serial device from a previous connection made by use of an IP cable since the Polisy has a 9-Pin serial connector and the PLM has an RJ45 connector. I had something to follow from Universal Devices, but I checked it against the data sheet for the product to ensure it was correct. Works well. Do know, if you push a connector into one of the Serial plug sockets, you cannot take it back out.

Worked For Sonicwall
Badly needed a DB9 adapter to be able to console to a broken Sonicwall NSA network appliance. Unfortunately, Sonicwall has a unique/different pinout for their console port. Found this modular DB9 adapter here at Amazon & with the Sonicwall instructions for pinout position and whala, was able to console & resolve our issue. Also, in case you connected the wrong wire on a wrong position, you can use a small screwdriver to push it out. The one I used came with my eyeglass repair kit.

Non standard color codes.
Good quality adapter but color codes are not standard for Cat5, makes for a lot more work to sort out the right pins.
