Q: I bought these lights per your recommendation to put on my golf cart. my golf cart has a usb port. what do i need to buy to plug this into the usb?

You bought the wrong thing. These are not usb powered and you’ll spend enough to buy 5 sets of usb powered lights trying to get them to be. These are for professional and hobbyist installations with addressable ic chips to perform a pattern, you’d need the control unit and power supply and app for phone or computer; the power these draw will also drain your cart’s battery much faster than a normal set of usb string lights. Return them.

Q: 12vdc for longer run makes sense. but when using 12 vdc, is the data line 5vdc or does that also have to be bumped up to 12 vdc?

I have had several problems with the quality of this product. Please see my review. They send strips with LEDs that do not work. To answer your question though... No, the data line voltage is determined by the board or controller you are using. Some will output data at 5 volts and others at ~3 volts. If you keep the data line short (less than 12 inches), 3 volts data should be ok. I had a much longer run from my boards (esp8266 based node MCUs and wemos D1 minis) and needed to use a logic level shifter to boost the data line voltage to 5 volts. I believe 12 volts data would damage any LED strip.

Q: can I do a 100 foot run with just power injection at the start and end of the run ?

If you don't light up full brightness white light ,yes ,it can . The LEDs at the far end of the strip might be dimmer because of the added resistance and voltage drop that occurs as the current flows to that end of the strip. This is a normal physical phenomenon, and all the LED strips cannot avoid this problem. The factors that affect brightness are： 1. Length. If your project is too long, the voltage drops. 2. Power supply. Make sure the power is enough for the project. 3. Lighting effect. The full white lighting effect will consume a lot of energy. When you Light up 1 color(red or green or blue or pure white) 0.1W/LED. Light up 2 colors (red+green) 0.2W/LED , Light up 3 colors (red+green+blue=mixed white) 0.3W/LED. 4. Brightness. The brighter the brightness, the more consumption. Solution： 1. Adding voltage every 5 meters (16.4ft). 2. Lower brightness 3. Enough power 4. Avoid the full white lighting effect.
