Successful Scientific Writing: A Step-by-Step Guide for the Biological and Medical Sciences 4th Edition

This is an excellent book on scientific writing--it is no accident that it is in its 4th edition. I love its practicality--it is full of concrete instructions and examples, as opposed to unsupported opinions. The examples are exceptionally clear, and easy to implement in your own writing projects. I like it so much that I refer to it in my own book on scientific writing (full disclosure: I am an author for the same press). Following its suggestions will help you write papers that are easy for the reader to follow, and pleasant for you to write.

I prefer the earlier edition since it’s spiral bound. But this is my favorite writing book. I manage a team of clinical scientists and it’s my onboarding welcome gift. It’s filled with helpful hints and clear examples. I have several writing books but this is far and away the most practically useful.

I use this as an aid to teaching undergraduate and graduate ecology students scientific writing. I love the manner in which the material is presented. It is quite concise and conversational in presentation. There is an appropriate dose of humor included, and the authors provide plenty of tips and examples of both good and bad approaches throughout.

This was a recommended book for a course I took in Environmental Communications, but it is an excellent primer for any type of scientific writing. It is full of useful information and it is easy to jump around for information depending on what you are looking for or struggling with. This book definitely helped me to improve my writing.

The authors have great tips and I find that it helps to just get you writing. The organization of the book allows you to skip around and look for the section of interest. I haven't gone through the whole book but it's worth the use I've got out of it so far.

Excellent 4th Edition. I have the first edition (1996) and this one is just so much better with greatly expanded content.

good structure and good for a non-native speaker

If you are buying this for a graduate level class, do not bother. It is written at a fifth grade level and provides absolutely no useful information for anyone who has any experience writing scientific papers.
