.com For four years in the early 1970s, comedian Flip Wilson presided over one of the most popular variety shows on television. The show featured weekly guest stars as well as Wilson's own characters, the most noteworthy of whom were "Reverend Leroy," the genially bombastic pastor of the "Church of What's Happening Now," and "Geraldine Jones," a thoroughly sassy and proud African American woman played by Wilson in a miniskirt. Featuring highlights from five episodes of the program, this collection includes the show's very first appearance on September 17, 1970. Wilson cavorts shamelessly and hysterically as Geraldine during an interview with David Frost and in a skit that features TV legend Ed Sullivan, acting (well, sort of) as a lounge lizard in garish '70s garb (including purple pants and a leather vest). Bill Cosby appears in several skits, and other guest stars include Lucille Ball, Don Rickles, Bobby Darin, Tim Conway, Red Foxx, Ray Charles, the Osmonds (singing and dancing in signature rhinestone jumpsuits), and Big Bird of Sesame Street. Wilson's career never again reached the peak he attained in the early 1970s, but these programs show how truly hilarious he was at the time his character Geraldine Jones had the whole country saying, "The devil made me do it!" --Robert J. FLIP WILSON Comedy Shows A Blast From The Past!
I was inspired to write this review about the DVD releases on the classic Flip Wilson Show because several "reviewers" have written negative remarks. First of all, let it be known for the record that the Late Flip Wilson himself acquired the "rights" to his hour long comedy-variety show[episodes]from NBC back in the early 1990's and he set about editing them down to half hour episodes. His plan was to include the HIGHLIGHTS from each program within a half hour format. Eventually, after several years of hard work, cable's TV LAND aired his wonderfully edited episodes. The man was a comic genius! His characters, most notably "Geraldine Jones", were spectacular individuals who strangely enough developed "lives" of their own in our nation's Pop Culture, becoming massively popular & famous "in their own right". Who could ever forget that incredibly funny and true life-like character "Geraldine"?! That chick really had it going on and was a riot to boot! Anyway, releases on VHS were issued in single volumes[volume 1/volume 2 and so forth]with each tape including two episode "featurettes"...thus, on DVD a single disc will contain the equal to two VHS releases or 4 "featurettes" plus a "bonus" episode because of the expanded format on disc. THE FLIP WILSON SHOW has been issued by Rhino Video in superb video/sound quality, and three decades later, FLIP WILSON's universal brand of comedy has definitely withstood the test of time and remains extremely funny, charming and quite entertaining. Each disc is a goldmine full of laughter and entertainment; "Geraldine's" skits are truly the ultimate best! I just bet you FLIP is in heaven keeping all the angels & GOD laughing incredibly hard!

I miss Flip Wilson - and the comedy/variety show format (!)
I was (9) years old when 'The Flip Wilson Show' hit the airwaves. It was one of those shows that the whole family sat down and watched. While all of the bits are good - and while it was great to see Flip in his various characters cavorting with his guest stars - I purchased this DVD primarily for the appearance by the Osmond Brothers singing 'Yo-Yo.' They had only recently left 'The Andy Williams Show' and ventured out on their own. In tune with the times, they had grew their hair long and this performance is, I think, their most exciting televised ever. It's something I distinctly remembered way back when...! Overall, this was a classic show. Like other classic series, I hope entire shows become available on DVD!

Teens Flip for Flip!
We ordered several DVD's from Amazon for the Christmas holiday season. My husband and I remember enjoying the Flip Wilson TV show when it first aired. Our sons (ages 15 and 17) got a big kick out of this DVD. It included Flip's trademark character, "Geraldine" and her many references to the never-to-be-seen boyfriend, "Killer" and Flip's rendition of an enthusiastic preacher from "The Church of What's Happening Now!" Ed Sullivan is funny being himself and in a skit with Lucille Ball and "Geraldine". Bill Cosby and Flip have a couple of bits that look largely adlib and enjoyable. It is dated, naturally, and the pace is slower than today, but it's worth the price and an enjoyable viewing experience for those of us who remember it and for those younger people we introduce it to.

Still funny after all these years
I don't think I ever missed the Flip Wilson show on TV back in the 1970s. And I had all his gentle comedy records--still do. His "Devil Made Me Buy This Dress" and "Go-Rilla" were classics. It's wonderful that some of his TV shows are now available on DVDs. This is a good one for showcasing what he could do. Geraldine was a wonderful character. I was especially fond of Geraldine as a nurse for Bill Cosby, who is in the hospital for a rest. It still makes me laugh out loud. As does Brother Leroy in The Church of What's Happening Now.And the bit with Ray Charles...but I could go on and on. This is a DVD definitely worth having. Get it while you can.

The Flip Wilson Show
Flip was such a great comedian! The Bonus episode was a riot. If you remember the Osmond Brothers a way back when, it's a treat to see them and the Ed Sullivan/ Lucille Ball sketch with Geraldine, is definitely worth the price of the DVD.The Night Nurse w/Bill Crosby is another great sketch. If only we had excellent comedians like them now! The innuendoes are strictly adult and never objectionable. So much better than what we see now on TV. Buy this DVD!! What fun.

Classic funny!
I loved Flip Wilson and all the characters he portrayed. I don't understand why his name is not put out there as one of the best comedians. I never heard anyone give him his props as being a great African American that helped open some of the doors for others. I find that very sad. Flip Wilson will always be one of the great ones in my book!

It is only 1.5 hours for 30.00. Description is very poor.
It is only 5 episodes!!!! For 30.00. The information is so sparce... I NEVER would have paid that for 1.5 hours of various skits. I've paid that for the COMPLETE Series of several other shows of the same era. I would like a refund but since it's not "prime" it wont happen. Dont buy if u cant find the fine print.
